Unity in Action: The Power of the Black Community’s Boycott During Black Lives Matter Movement in 2020

In the wake of George Floyd’s tragic death, the world witnessed an unprecedented surge in solidarity within the Black community. One of the most inspiring and eye-opening responses while anger and sadness soared in the black community, was the collective decision to boycott major e-commerce giants and exclusively support Black designers and entrepreneurs. The Black Lives Movement was (and always has been) about economic action as much as it was a powerful statement of unity, resilience, and empowerment.

During the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, there was a heightened awareness and intentional support for Black-owned businesses. The decision to shift spending away from large corporations and toward Black-owned businesses highlighted a significant cultural and economic awakening triggered by the fight to end racial discrimination, police brutality and social injustice. This movement served as a reminder of the immense potential within the Black community to support and uplift each other in time of need. It underscored the importance of economic power in the fight against systemic racism and inequality.

The boycott also provided a platform for Black designers and entrepreneurs who had long been overlooked by mainstream markets. The fashion industry was forced to question its embedded Eurocentric outlook and these talented individuals, often working in the shadows, suddenly found themselves in the spotlight with their creativity and innovation celebrated by a broader audience. The surge in support led to increased visibility, sales, and growth opportunities for many Black-owned businesses.

Fashion brand “Telfar” is a perfect case study, let’s explore this further.

Telfar, the unisex fashion brand founded by Liberian-American designer Telfar Clemens in 2005, saw a significant surge in popularity and support during the Black Lives Matter movement.

Some key factors that contributed to Telfar’s rise:

1. Representation and Inclusivity: Telfar has always championed inclusivity and accessibility in fashion, aligning with the values of the Black Lives Matter movement. The brand’s slogan, “Not for you, for everyone,” resonated with a wide audience seeking diversity and representation in the fashion industry.

2. Affordable Luxury: Telfar’s signature shopping bag, often referred to as the “Bushwick Birkin,” offers a high-quality, stylish alternative to expensive luxury bags. Its affordability and status as a fashion statement made it highly desirable during a time when consumers were seeking to support ethical and inclusive brands.

3. Community Engagement: Telfar’s strong community engagement, including direct interaction with fans on social media and transparent business practices, helped build a loyal customer base. This grassroots support was amplified during the movement as people looked for brands that aligned with their values.

4. Celebrity Endorsements: High-profile endorsements from celebrities like Solange Knowles, Bella Hadid, and A$AP Ferg helped elevate Telfar’s visibility and credibility. These endorsements became even more impactful as celebrities and influencers used their platforms to promote Black-owned brands during the movement.

5. Innovative Marketing and Collaborations: Telfar’s innovative marketing strategies, including the “Bag Security Program” that allowed customers to pre-order their bags, demonstrated a commitment to accessibility and inclusivity. Collaborations with major brands like Gap and UGG further expanded Telfar’s reach and visibility.

Overall, Telfar’s surge during the Black Lives Matter movement was driven by a combination of its core values, strategic positioning, and the broader cultural shift towards supporting Black-owned businesses and inclusive, accessible fashion.

It goes beyond the walls of fashion, it cuts across all industries – Fenty beauty, Pat McGrath Labs, Brandon Blackwood, Maison Noir Wines, Golde, TomboyX, The Lip Bar, KaiCollective, just to name a few personal favourites.

Moreover, this movement fostered a sense of connection and solidarity. People came together, shared resources, and promoted Black-owned businesses through purchases, social media and word-of-mouth. The community’s collective effort to support each other was both heartwarming and empowering, demonstrating that true change comes from within. This period was a testament to the power of community action. It was a time when every purchase made from a Black-owned business was not just a transaction, but a step towards justice and equality worldwide. The Canadian Federal Government invested $90 million in a black entrepreneurship program to help access bank loans, mentorship and other valuable resources. In the US, a substantial amount of people were and still are committed to directing majority of their purchases to black-owned businesses, organisations hire black employees or that are empathetic to the black community. Even across major cities in the UK such as London and Manchester, shortly after the death of George Floyd, protesters gathered and leveraged their rights to peaceful protests with signboards reading “How many more?”. A similar event occurred less than a decade prior in London, Mark Duggan a 29-year old black male suffered a gunshot to the chest and was killed by British police. This led to public protests in Tottenham and escalated into riots across London and other cities.

The boycott reminded us all that our economic choices can be a form of protest, a way to demand change and support those who need it most.

In conclusion, the collective boycott of e-commerce giants in favour of Black designers and entrepreneurs during the 2020 Black Lives Matter movement was a profound and inspiring example of unity and empowerment. It showcased the strength of the Black community and the importance of supporting each other in the fight for justice. This movement was a powerful reminder that together, we can create meaningful change and build a more equitable future.

Bellafricana’s End of Year Round Up

Year end round up

Reflecting on the past 12 months, our 2023 end of year round up is a journey through the highs, the lessons, and the growth. Join us as we revisit milestones, celebrate achievements, and look forward to what this year holds. It’s a moment to appreciate the collective journey and the stories that have shaped our year.

We kick off this with a Letter from our founder Mrs Bukky Asehinde, to you;

As we bid farewell to 2023, I find myself reflecting on a chapter that almost didn’t happen – a chapter I was almost ready to close. I sat on my laptop about the same time last year ready to inform you that Bellafricana was shutting down!

I share this not just as a founder but as a companion on this winding entrepreneurial road.

Exactly a year ago, at the verge of giving up, I faced the daunting prospect of letting go of Bellafricana. Relocating to the UK with my young family added to the weight of uncertainty.

If you’re a dream carrier who recently relocated, the struggle might hit close to home! Balancing the need for a stable income against the pursuit of your entrepreneurial dreams can be a real challenge.

In pursuit of what seemed like a promising detour – 7 months of searching for a job, finally getting a new job as a Community and Marketing Manager – I walked away after just one month. Little did I know that this detour was a divine setup for a remarkable comeback.

At this juncture, I realised my passion for realising the Bellafricana dream had transformed into an unyielding obsession to achieve it.

This year, I dared myself to dream again: Have a look at the milestones summary –

  1. Re-Opened the Bellafricana tech-enabled community FREE in March 2023, a home for more creative entrepreneurs.
  2. Launched Bellafricana Pop-up Store in Nigeria in April 2023.
  3. Introduced Bellafricana Travels in April/May 2023.
  4. Launched Bellafricana UK with a pop-up event on London’s Oxford Street in July/August 2023.
  5. Introduced my first official course, the Invisible to Page One Google SEO Course in November 2023.
  6. Embarked on one-on-one business coaching sessions, charging at least £100 an hour, in November 2023.

I give all the glory to God for turning my test into a testimony. He has a way of working it all out for our good.

Why am I sharing this? Because I know the weight of uncertainty, the frustration of unmet expectations, and the contemplation of letting go. If you’re at that crossroad, let me be the voice that says, “Your detour might just be a setup for a remarkable comeback.”

Hold on, dear entrepreneur. Trust the process, the detours and the unique journey that is yours. It’s not always about the speed but the direction.

May your year close with hope, renewed courage, and the unwavering belief that, indeed, the best is yet to come.

Rooting for your journey,

Bukky Asehinde (Founder, Bellafricana).

Always leave a message!

ALWAYS LEAVE A MESSAGE

I always leave a message, especially if it’s important. And I have found out that it works.

You are calling a prospect again to remind him or her of your services. You ended into a voice mail again, just like you were the last time you called. And the time before that. And the time before that. What should you do?

Leave another message? Hang up and try again next week with the hopes of finally getting through to a real person?

Leave a message. Pleasant persistence always wins. Leave a message [text or voice mail] just often enough to remind your prospect of your services or product. But don’t call so often that you actually are making a nuisance of yourself.

Why Should You Leave A Message?
  1. You are gaining recognition for your product or services. You may not get through to your prospect this time or next, but the information you leave will.
  2. For another, you are building rapport with your prospect even if you are not making direct contact. Your continued calling will convince your prospect that your are consistent, and persistent.
  3. Finally, you are being informative. One of your products or services might be a sales item. You need to let your prospect know this so they have an opportunity to take advantage of the discount.

KEEP YOUR MESSAGES SHORT

Keep your Messages short
  • This is important as you may be perceived as being “the intolerable nuisance” you think you are becoming. Remember KISS? Keep It Short and Simple.
  • Tell most of the important information first. Do not dawdle. Mentioning the benefits your services or product will provide first and then how to contact you.
  • At the end of the message, leave your phone number and/or web site address. Repeat your name, company name, and phone number one more time out of courtesy to the prospect so he or she doesn’t have to repeat the message.

In case your prospect finally decides to pick up the phone and return your call. And they will, you have already laid the ground work, making you one step closer to making a sale.

Telemarketing tips you should know.

Telemarketing Tips You Should Know

Telemarketing should never be undermined, as it could make or break your company. It could even improve or worsen the sales growth of the business. Note, asides from physical and virtual communication,  phone calls are a more direct form of communicating. Understandably, not everyone can be good at telemarketing. Here are Telemarketing tips you should know.

Effective telemarketing campaigns are targeted to customers and prospects that are most likely to respond. They broaden the names of your products, services, or company to the prospects you want to reach.Telemarketing Programs

There are generally two types of telemarketing programs:
  • One that generates a sale or close.
  • One that generates a request for more information.

Which one works for your company, of course, depends upon what type of product or service you are selling. It may be possible to sell your products or services right over the phone. Or it could require an additional appointment for a demonstration with a salesperson. The type of product or service, its complexity, and whether it is hard to sell or not, will also determine the type of telemarketing program you should develop. So when planning your campaign, keep in mind all these factors.

I advice that if your product or service is relatively inexpensive and can be demonstrated easily, using the telemarketing campaign as a way of “selling” appointments or even the product or service, go ahead as it can lead to the conclusion of the sale right over the phone!

If the prospect feels that your product or service is expensive, they generally require more information before they purchase or even consent to a demonstration. In these cases, you may want to design a campaign that triggers a Request for more information.

You must also keep in mind that the more expensive the item you sell, the higher up on the chain of command the decision-maker will be. You need to find out who the proper decision-maker would be, and if they were willing to receive more information on the product or service you are providing.

Furthermore, try calling to verify addresses. Reminding them of your product or service. No hard sell involved, as you are just checking in.

Whether they choose to admit it or not, the goal of every business or product owner is to be noticed and patronised by people outside the shores of their country.

One problem business owners have faced for years is making their products noticed by other consumers apart from those within their vicinity.

Getting products noticed by global consumers is always difficult for Africa’s creative women entrepreneurs, but this challenge represented an opportunity for Bukky Asehinde, Founder of Bellafricana. Her platform is giving visibility to Nigeria’s creative business owners and their quality products.

Bellafricana, is a platform that empowers, supports and connects quality, talented and creative indigenous businesses to their local and global consumers.

Starting with Nigeria, their goal is to take it one African Country at a time.

Bellafricana Flier

Bukky created a platform to enable creative MSMEs to thrive, whilst doing all it takes to bring the quality products to the forefront of the market. She believes very much that a support group/community for these businesses will enhance the non-oil export in the African economy.

Bukky was inspired to start this up when she noticed a rise in the number of creative indigenous (made in Nigeria, Africa) brands that have great quality, yet are struggling to grow their business with little or no financing from both the government and bigger institutions.

She wondered for a long time, “Why should we wait on financial backing from the government and big institutions to help this industry, when we can create a platform to connect these Indigenous businesses who are maximising raw materials in Nigeria (Africa), providing employment for local talents within the country and creating wealth for the Nation?”. And so she conducted a research, which made her realize that one of the major challenges these businesses were facing majorly has to do with marketing and understanding the trade, which is the heart of any business.

This birthed Bellafricana, a community that showcases the products of local entrepreneurs to a wider audience, both locally and globally.

Bukky finds satisfaction as an entrepreneur because she is able to contribute to the growth of the economy, making an impact that will outlive her, and touching lives.

Her counsel to women who are trying to start a business is simple:

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH WISE & POSITIVE PEOPLE:

This is so vital especially when you know your personality type. I am an extrovert and a positive person, so having negative people around me was a no no. This I know has certainly helped my journey. Another key one is surrounding yourself with wise people, as the bible says also “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed”.

GET MENTORS:

It’s important to have mentors who key into the vision of what you do and are thought leaders in their various sectors not necessarily celebrities. How? (you might ask) by keeping a relationship with them and striking a mutually beneficial balance of what they do, they will give you more than their time when you show you care.”

Bellafricana is that “support system” every creative business owner needs to be globally accessible.

How do you Respond when a client says “I’ll get back to you”

How to respond when a client says I'll call you back

“I’ll get back to you”

Five dreaded words every salesperson hates to hear. Especially after you just spent 20 hours calling, and nurturing this client.

Then voila! They drop the bombshell.

How do you respond?

Some horrible responses to that line are:

“Oh Okay, I’ll be waiting to hear back from you”- When? Probably Never. Because those prospects will most likely not call back.

“Alright. When can I call back?”– In the prospect’s head, he’ll think ”Maybe, Never”

Well before responding hastily ( and losing the client all together), you must try to understand why the prospect used that line. The reason could be one of three:

  1. Prospect does not trust your product:

Think about it: It’s much easier for a prospect to say “I’ll get back to you”, than to say “Hi! I think your product sucks and I don’t want to waste my money”

  2. Prospect needs more time to make findings:

Some prospects aren’t going to base their decisions on some things you have told them. Instead, they would rather make their own findings, check out the competition, and weigh their options before making a decision.

3. They’re probably not the “Final say” in the hierarchy of the company’s affairs.

So, they will have to report to a “Higher Authority before making the decision to buy your product or service.

Response 1: Frontal

In my experience, whenever a prospect tells me that, it’s either of 3 things (Proceed to paraphrase 3 reasons mentioned above). Which one of them is it right now?

What that response yields: Complete honesty. It’ll help you understand the prospect’s state of mind, and will give clarity on how to proceed from there.

Response 2: Defensive

X, I understand why you may need to take some time to rethink this. But let’s be honest with each other. The longer time you take making a good decision for your business, the longer that problem you’ve been trying to manage stays. Tell you what, why don;t you take XXX advice (give a free tip) and apply this to your business. I’ll be waiting for your feedback …

What this response yields: You have just reduced your prospect’s “think about it” time, without coercion, and helped him out at the same time. Chances are that you’ll be hearing from him soon.

Response 3:  Vulnerability

X, I really appreciate your taking time to hear me out. From your response, it might seem that I haven’t exactly communicated the value you’ll be getting from us well. So, why don’t you tell me what you would have loved to hear, that would have helped make a better decision?

What this response yields: Again, you’ll take honest feedback which will help out …

Remember: These responses may not yield the results you desire all the time  It’ll however, help you perfect your sales skill, and help you work on areas that need adjustment.

Which of these responses are you planning to use?
