[dropcap custom_class=”normal”] The hibiscus drink has awesome and unbelievable benefits. Hibiscus plants grow in warm and tropical areas and are renowned for their trumpet like flowers. When dried, certain parts of the plant can be used to make beverages that can either be drank warm or cold. [/dropcap]

Zobo is the Hausa word for Hibiscus Sabdariffa and is made out of a dried species of Hibiscus leaves called Roselle. In Australia the drink is called Rosella and it is known as Sorrel in Jamaica.
It is also known as hibiscus tea, red tea or sour tea. It is thick, a dark beet red, tasty, and slightly sour. It can be infused and drank as tea.
The first time I tasted Zobo, I wasn’t sure what it was I was drinking and back then; all I cared about was eating or drinking anything that would “color” my tongue. And after a few sips, zobo did just that. My tongue and lips would get dark and I would be supremely excited.
Talk about simple pleasures. Sigh.
The Hibiscus plant has high nutritional value and contains a large amount of Vitamin C which helps in treating cold, cough, fever and infection. It also contains antioxidants and about 15 to 30% of organic acids which aid in the prevention of cancer as it strengthens the immune system. This is what makes the hibiscus drink so popular.
It is also known to treat loss of appetite, liver diseases, fever, high blood pressure etc

People with kidney problems are advised to take it without adding sugar or any sweetening agent so as not to water down the effect. It increases the kidneys ability to filter waste products. The anti hypertensive components of the hibiscus plant are used to manage hypertension. It helps reduce cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, diabetes, constipation etc
A research carried out in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in 2008 proved that consuming the hibiscus drink aka Zobo lowered blood pressure in a group of pre hypertensive and mildly hypertensive adults
The consumption of zobo can help in weight loss and in retaining fluid in the body. Its antibacterial properties help to rid the body of unwanted carbohydrates, bacteria, worms and enzymes. It also serves as a diuretic.
It contains Carotene, riboflavin, iron, niacin and calcium and do you want to know the best part about zobo? It is absolutely caffeine free!
However, with all its awesomeness, there is a downside to everything. Zobo should be taken in moderation as excess of it may be harmful to the kidney.
Hibiscus drink in any form is NOT recommended for breastfeeding mothers and pregnant women especially those in their first trimester. Oestrogens are the hormones responsible for the changes in the female reproductive organs, drinking Zobo during pregnancy will reduce the oestrogen levels in the body and may induce menstruation which would ultimately cause or lead to a miscarriage.
Pregnant women are strongly advised to stay away from it.
Usually served cold, Zobo because of its sour taste is made with sugar and/or pineapples to sweeten it.
Its delicious! But, if you’re not making it at home, it is best to only purchase zobo from vendors you can trust. You can get one of such from bellafricana verified G’s All fresh
