Adewumi-Inenemo Aminah is the CEO of Handmadepreneur. An indigene of Ikare Akoko North East Ondo state, and a graduate of industrial chemistry. A mother of 5, whose passion to creatively design handmade bags emerged after passing through pains of getting good bags of her taste for her kids and then decided to take the bull by the horn. She is a multitasking individual, always willing to improve her skills, determined to have her impact felt in her immediate environment and the world at large.

  • Please introduce yourself and your background

I am Adewumi-Inenemo Aminah. A graduate of industrial chemistry from the great University of Benin. I hail from Ikate  Akoko North East Ondo state.

 

  • Tell us about your work. How did your company start?

I started Handmadepreneur in 2019 after my epistle of searching for a bag of my choice in 2018 as an expectant mum of a set of twins. Since I couldn’t get any, it occurred to me that many Nigerians face this problem of not being able to tweak their bag of choice since their quest for a durable, quality and well finished bag is top priority.

 

  • How did you come about the name and what does it mean?

Handmadepreneur came from the fact that I wanted the name handmade emblazoned in my products and as my name as it would also depict to people that the bags are handmade. I then added –preneur from the word entrepreneur.

 

  • What is your niche and how did you know it was a market to get into?

My niche are families with kids under age of 19 as I saw most mothers face the problem of getting the right bag for their toddlers, young ones in elementary or themselves, in terms of packing both their personal items and that of their children all in one piece; this is  typical to the African woman. Also I realised from my survey that most mothers wish their kids bags are like ‘this or that’ due to their own peculiarity and because they are yet to find that Nigerian bag maker who gives them their bag the way they want it, they opt for imported ones to solve one of their quest.

 

  • Where do you get the inspiration for your products?

I get them from narrations of pains parents discuss with finding their bags and my imagination of possibilities of what a bag could have.

 

  • Can you remember one of the first products you made? What makes it memorable?

Our multi-pocket diaper bag. It was sold out before I blinked my eyes. Mothers loved it for its features such as, lots of pockets, it’s ability to keep their baby’s items all in one place and organized.

 

  • What are some of the challenges you face in your business?

Structure! Getting the right personnel and marketing right.

 

  • Do you have any regrets venturing into this line of business?

None. Not even a tiny bit.

 

  • What is your most popular product?

  • To what extent do you draw upon your Nigerian (African) heritage for your work?

For now we are not much of African but soon we intend bringing in the African touch. Making our own arts of African heritage on our bags.

 

  • What are some of your short term and long term goals, both in your business and life in general?

To be a brand that would be a game changer to many women, by providing them with trainings, and an opportunity to provide employment for themselves.

To improve my business skills by taking a business management course in 2022.

Get certified internationally as a bag designer.

 

  • What would people be surprised to learn about you?

That I am a star chemistry teacher. 😂 I mean students loved my class and wondered why I left.

 

  • What profession would you be in if you weren’t in this Industry?

Teaching. I would be a teacher but then again, we are all teaching, in one form or the other.

 

  • If you could give one piece of advice to anyone who wants to start their own business in your industry, what would it be?

Never think small. Always aim at the best and you will see how you will work to achieve it

The whole transformation process starts from obtaining your body measurements and desired style. She then carefully cuts the fabric into different shaped pieces before she then starts sewing it together to form your dress.

Another designer goes behind to work on the embellishments and finishing touches, putting careful detail into every flow of tasks that’s needed to make a perfect dress.

What do these processes indicate? A system. Workflow, if you will.

A workflow refers to any action or series of actions which are automated by other means e.g. tools, digital methods that can be triggered to occur by human actions. Africa is blessed with talented creatives, and Bukola Asafa, CEO of Nigerian  brand, Oba Couture is not an exception. Her amazing shoe and bag collections all have indigenous names, and that’s one thing we love about her brand. Read on to see what else there is to know about Oba Couture.

 

Please introduce yourself and your background.

My name is Olubukola Asafa, I was born into a family of five comprising of myself, mum, dad, 2 brothers and 1 sister.
My Dad worked with the Nigerian Television Authority and my mum was an Entrepreneur. I was born in Ilorin, Kwara State, and moved to Lagos at age 3.
I attended Queen’s College ( Yaba, Lagos) for my secondary school education, then went to the University of Abuja for my tertiary education.

 

Tell us about your work. How did Oba Couture Limited start?

It started in 2011 while studying for my MBA. I wanted to be an Entrepreneur and I wanted to start to implement all that I was learning.

Prior to that, I had been praying to God for direction. I started selling readymade shoes and bags, but because I love to create and work with my hands, I knew that I had to start making them.

I also noticed that a lot of footwear and bags which were made in Nigeria always claimed to be ‘Made in Italy’. I had many questions and so I decided I would make a difference and bring ‘made in Nigeria’ back. That was my mission.

How did you come about the name and what does it mean?

OBA means KING in Yoruba Language, but the brand OBA is referring to GOD the King of all Kings. OBA is also my initials: OLUBUKOLA BODUNDE ASAFA.

What is your niche and how did you know it was a market to get into?

My niche market is buyers like me who are fashionable and want something unique and of exceptional quality.

Where do you get the inspiration for your products?

I get inspired from everyday living, time spent with loved ones, my quiet time, and sometimes just interacting with my customers.

Can you remember one of the first products you made? What makes it memorable?

Yes. I remember a bag I made for my Pastor  (Pastor Mrs. Bemigho).

She ordered a bag to encourage me when I just started. It was an ankara bag and what makes it memorable is that it was made of carton (lol).

What are some of the challenges you face in your business?

Some of the challenges are poor infrastructure, inadequate power supply, lack of adequate skill, and unfair competition with imported shoes and bags.

Do you have any regrets venturing into this line of business?

I have no regrets whatsoever. I love what I do and I am very passionate about my craft.

What is your most popular product?

Hmm.  It’s difficult to say which one, but customers tend to purchase our unique line of male sandals more than the rest. So I guess those are more popular (lol).

To what extent do you draw upon your Nigerian (African) heritage for your work?

Our exotic leathers are gotten from the northern part of Nigeria. We also try to make our products as natural as can be. We do not use the professional processing machines used abroad, and most of our products have unique African names.

What are some of your short term and long term goals, both in your business and life in general?

For my business, my Short term goals are: Engaging in more unique strategies for sales and marketing , getting the word out and making our products more accessible to our target audience.

My long term  business goals would be building a sustainable brand that will stand the test of time and build a lasting legacy.

For life in general, my short term goals would be to  read more books and exercise more. In the long term, I’m working towards eating healthier, making every second count and impacting the world positively.

I am a shy girl

What profession would you be in if you weren’t in this Industry?

I would be a Lawyer

If you could give one piece of advice to anyone who wants to start their own business in your industry, what would it be?

Do not despise the days of humble beginnings, you don’t have to start big you can start small and then grow.

The African culture is rich, strong, colorful, diverse and powerful. Mimiremi textiles new collection of prints titled ‘OTU’, which means ‘1’(ONE) in Igbo language has its strength both in the pattern and the symbolic nature of the number one.

 

Speaking about the new collection, Aderonke Jaiyeola, founder of Mimiremi Textiles said, “I remember vividly that cool Saturday afternoon in 2012, light drizzle of rain dropping on me and the table in front of me as I struggled to print 2 yards of fabrics in front of the house using the screen printing method. Discouraged by the stress of the work and the imperfect print I made, I ventured into other things.

For many years I’ve had the passion to help designers create unique Custom made designs for their brand without stress. Earlier in the year, I was determined to start printing our fabrics in Nigeria. Despite big hurdles, disappointments and sleepless nights, I am happy to finally present our first collection of hand printed fabrics to my dear friends and colleagues…’ OTU (NO 1)”.

Aderonke was also delighted to let us know that now;
