Unity in Action: The Power of the Black Community’s Boycott During Black Lives Matter Movement in 2020

In the wake of George Floyd’s tragic death, the world witnessed an unprecedented surge in solidarity within the Black community. One of the most inspiring and eye-opening responses while anger and sadness soared in the black community, was the collective decision to boycott major e-commerce giants and exclusively support Black designers and entrepreneurs. The Black Lives Movement was (and always has been) about economic action as much as it was a powerful statement of unity, resilience, and empowerment.

During the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, there was a heightened awareness and intentional support for Black-owned businesses. The decision to shift spending away from large corporations and toward Black-owned businesses highlighted a significant cultural and economic awakening triggered by the fight to end racial discrimination, police brutality and social injustice. This movement served as a reminder of the immense potential within the Black community to support and uplift each other in time of need. It underscored the importance of economic power in the fight against systemic racism and inequality.

The boycott also provided a platform for Black designers and entrepreneurs who had long been overlooked by mainstream markets. The fashion industry was forced to question its embedded Eurocentric outlook and these talented individuals, often working in the shadows, suddenly found themselves in the spotlight with their creativity and innovation celebrated by a broader audience. The surge in support led to increased visibility, sales, and growth opportunities for many Black-owned businesses.

Fashion brand “Telfar” is a perfect case study, let’s explore this further.

Telfar, the unisex fashion brand founded by Liberian-American designer Telfar Clemens in 2005, saw a significant surge in popularity and support during the Black Lives Matter movement.

Some key factors that contributed to Telfar’s rise:

1. Representation and Inclusivity: Telfar has always championed inclusivity and accessibility in fashion, aligning with the values of the Black Lives Matter movement. The brand’s slogan, “Not for you, for everyone,” resonated with a wide audience seeking diversity and representation in the fashion industry.

2. Affordable Luxury: Telfar’s signature shopping bag, often referred to as the “Bushwick Birkin,” offers a high-quality, stylish alternative to expensive luxury bags. Its affordability and status as a fashion statement made it highly desirable during a time when consumers were seeking to support ethical and inclusive brands.

3. Community Engagement: Telfar’s strong community engagement, including direct interaction with fans on social media and transparent business practices, helped build a loyal customer base. This grassroots support was amplified during the movement as people looked for brands that aligned with their values.

4. Celebrity Endorsements: High-profile endorsements from celebrities like Solange Knowles, Bella Hadid, and A$AP Ferg helped elevate Telfar’s visibility and credibility. These endorsements became even more impactful as celebrities and influencers used their platforms to promote Black-owned brands during the movement.

5. Innovative Marketing and Collaborations: Telfar’s innovative marketing strategies, including the “Bag Security Program” that allowed customers to pre-order their bags, demonstrated a commitment to accessibility and inclusivity. Collaborations with major brands like Gap and UGG further expanded Telfar’s reach and visibility.

Overall, Telfar’s surge during the Black Lives Matter movement was driven by a combination of its core values, strategic positioning, and the broader cultural shift towards supporting Black-owned businesses and inclusive, accessible fashion.

It goes beyond the walls of fashion, it cuts across all industries – Fenty beauty, Pat McGrath Labs, Brandon Blackwood, Maison Noir Wines, Golde, TomboyX, The Lip Bar, KaiCollective, just to name a few personal favourites.

Moreover, this movement fostered a sense of connection and solidarity. People came together, shared resources, and promoted Black-owned businesses through purchases, social media and word-of-mouth. The community’s collective effort to support each other was both heartwarming and empowering, demonstrating that true change comes from within. This period was a testament to the power of community action. It was a time when every purchase made from a Black-owned business was not just a transaction, but a step towards justice and equality worldwide. The Canadian Federal Government invested $90 million in a black entrepreneurship program to help access bank loans, mentorship and other valuable resources. In the US, a substantial amount of people were and still are committed to directing majority of their purchases to black-owned businesses, organisations hire black employees or that are empathetic to the black community. Even across major cities in the UK such as London and Manchester, shortly after the death of George Floyd, protesters gathered and leveraged their rights to peaceful protests with signboards reading “How many more?”. A similar event occurred less than a decade prior in London, Mark Duggan a 29-year old black male suffered a gunshot to the chest and was killed by British police. This led to public protests in Tottenham and escalated into riots across London and other cities.

The boycott reminded us all that our economic choices can be a form of protest, a way to demand change and support those who need it most.

In conclusion, the collective boycott of e-commerce giants in favour of Black designers and entrepreneurs during the 2020 Black Lives Matter movement was a profound and inspiring example of unity and empowerment. It showcased the strength of the Black community and the importance of supporting each other in the fight for justice. This movement was a powerful reminder that together, we can create meaningful change and build a more equitable future.

The Evolution, An Exhibition Of African Lusture

the evolution

Jopee Dairo, the creative force behind THE EVOLUTION, is on a mission to bring change and shed light on the rich artistic heritage of the African people. This event is more than just an exhibition; it’s a platform that showcases the evolution of African art and culture.

Jopee Dairo is not just a visual artist but a storyteller, using various digital and mixed media forms to narrate tales from the African perspective. His inspiration is rooted in the greatness of the Black race and the untold stories that lie beneath the surface.

At THE EVOLUTION event, attendees can expect a captivating experience filled with intriguing, educational, and fascinating works of art. These pieces are not merely for purchase but also forging connections and rekindling memories of the goodness that has been lost and the promising future that lies ahead. Click here to register.

Here is an interview session with Jopee Dairo.

ABOUT JOPEE DAIRO

1. What inspired you to become a digital artist?

Ans: Firstly, My name is Gbemisola Joseph Dairo popularly known as Jopee Dairo; I am a Visual Artist with a uniqueness in telling stories from the African perspective using all forms of Digital and Mixed Media. I was inspired by the greatness of the Black race and the untold stories that lie beneath.

2. Can you describe your artistic style and how it has evolved over the years?

Ans: I am a mixed media artist who paints ideas to life with the digital use of African fabric patterns such as Kente, Adinkra, and Ankara. Over the years my Art has moved from mere creation of Artworks using black photography to telling untold stories about the greatness of motherland Africa.

3. What themes or concepts do you explore in your digital art?

Ans: Societal values, history, and change.

4. Are there any artists or influencers who have had a significant impact on your work?

Ans: Yes. These are the likes of Bisa Butler, Mayowa Lawal, and Mayowa Alabi.

5. How do you incorporate African culture and heritage into your digital art?

Ans: Africa is Art and Art is Africa. Photography has been my greatest tool as it gives me the limitless freedom I need to create compelling stories with my Art.

6. Can you share your creative process from idea to finished artwork?

Ans: From the point of conception, I do rough sketches on paper, do research, and prepare my storyboard, and then I relate with my photographer based on the concept. Once we come to terms, we get model(s) who we share the idea with and once that works, we proceed to shoot photography. The last part is when I get to do my digital edit, print, and put off for sale.

7. What challenges have you faced as a digital artist, and how did you overcome them?

Ans: One of the major challenges is finding inspiration not just to create but to continue. Other challenges are in the areas of affording gadgets, power supply, and understanding the markets.

I have found comfort in sharing my challenges with established artists or models whom I look up to in the business of Arts and Creativity. A problem shared is half solved, right? I am not there yet, but I am overcoming my challenges gradually.

8. What achievements or milestones in your career are you most proud of?

Ans: Having my work nominated for best documentary at the African Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA) 2023, featuring on a project with Ghana’s renowned Glenn Samm, and partnering at the BellAfricana UK Summer Pop-up 2023. Here are 6 ways to pamper yourself this Christmas and the New Year.

1. Have a beautiful glow

In as much as the year of year is a time to cool off and strategise, it is also a time to brighten up and add some spark and radiance to your glow. Having to count your blessings and losses is important as it helps you refocus, but while counting your losses, lots of negativity may want to set it. NO WAY! That’s why I am sharing our favorite moisturizer picks for every part of your body, from your face to your hands, and everything in between. We’ve got you covered with the best moisturizers for dry skin, oily skin, and everything in between. Moisturizing your skin is highly important. 3. Watch your diet

Perhaps you have heard that diet plays a significant role in the health and longevity of your skin. But you might be asking yourself: “What’s the best way to pamper my skin?” The blend of food you eat, the amount of water you drink, and the amount of exercise you have all have an effect on your skin. A healthy diet, drinking plenty of water, and exercisers will not only help your skin stay healthy, but they can also help your skin to look younger. The holiday season is in full swing, which means that many of us are feeling extremely festive and ready to celebrate. Unfortunately, when we start celebrating, it can be easy to overindulge in fun holiday activities and forget about our fitness goals. This blog is for you to help you stay on track and not lose your guards.

4. Visit Friends and loved ones

Christmas is just around the corner. Time to get those “I love you” gifts and the “I’m sorry” gifts ready, pack those bags and make sure you have enough food and drinks for the road. There are a lot of speculation as to what really causes acne and can often be daunting to find effective natural remedies for acne. While some will argue that the food we consume has a lot to do with facial breakouts, others are of the opinion that bad hygiene has its role to play, and also it could be genetically transferred or environment too matters.

All these speculations seems true and can be argued. I used to have terrible acne and I remember being told that was my season for it. Until I got myself good home remedies and skincare products to ultimately set me free.

For people suffering from these, here are 6 effective natural remedies for acne problems that was my last resort solution:

1. HYDRATING FACE CREAM

Hydrating face cream is one of such solution to acne problems. as dry skin more often than not tend to cause acne problems. The skin contains lots of hair follicles from which hair grows. Acne is the result of these becoming blocked. Tiny glands near the surface of the skin produce sebum, an oil that prevents the skin from drying out. They can produce too much sebum, which blocks the hair follicle. Other debris, such as dead skin, also builds up. With the Treda organic hydrating face cream, this gives the face the right amount of moisture that it deserves, thereby keeping the face smooth and silky.
