Bellafricana’s End of Year Round Up

Year end round up

Reflecting on the past 12 months, our 2023 end of year round up is a journey through the highs, the lessons, and the growth. Join us as we revisit milestones, celebrate achievements, and look forward to what this year holds. It’s a moment to appreciate the collective journey and the stories that have shaped our year.

We kick off this with a Letter from our founder Mrs Bukky Asehinde, to you;

As we bid farewell to 2023, I find myself reflecting on a chapter that almost didn’t happen – a chapter I was almost ready to close. I sat on my laptop about the same time last year ready to inform you that Bellafricana was shutting down!

I share this not just as a founder but as a companion on this winding entrepreneurial road.

Exactly a year ago, at the verge of giving up, I faced the daunting prospect of letting go of Bellafricana. Relocating to the UK with my young family added to the weight of uncertainty.

If you’re a dream carrier who recently relocated, the struggle might hit close to home! Balancing the need for a stable income against the pursuit of your entrepreneurial dreams can be a real challenge.

In pursuit of what seemed like a promising detour – 7 months of searching for a job, finally getting a new job as a Community and Marketing Manager – I walked away after just one month. Little did I know that this detour was a divine setup for a remarkable comeback.

At this juncture, I realised my passion for realising the Bellafricana dream had transformed into an unyielding obsession to achieve it.

This year, I dared myself to dream again: Have a look at the milestones summary –

  1. Re-Opened the Bellafricana tech-enabled community FREE in March 2023, a home for more creative entrepreneurs.
  2. Launched Bellafricana Pop-up Store in Nigeria in April 2023.
  3. Introduced Bellafricana Travels in April/May 2023.
  4. Launched Bellafricana UK with a pop-up event on London’s Oxford Street in July/August 2023.
  5. Introduced my first official course, the Invisible to Page One Google SEO Course in November 2023.
  6. Embarked on one-on-one business coaching sessions, charging at least £100 an hour, in November 2023.

I give all the glory to God for turning my test into a testimony. He has a way of working it all out for our good.

Why am I sharing this? Because I know the weight of uncertainty, the frustration of unmet expectations, and the contemplation of letting go. If you’re at that crossroad, let me be the voice that says, “Your detour might just be a setup for a remarkable comeback.”

Hold on, dear entrepreneur. Trust the process, the detours and the unique journey that is yours. It’s not always about the speed but the direction.

May your year close with hope, renewed courage, and the unwavering belief that, indeed, the best is yet to come.

Rooting for your journey,

Bukky Asehinde (Founder, Bellafricana).

7 Fun Places To Visit In Lagos

The Good Beach Fun places to visit in Lagos Nigeria Bellafricana

Lagos is a city packed with many top attractions and sights which you can visit for free if you are looking for fun places to visit in Lagos. As a matter of fact, when I first stepped into Lagos after my Youth service. I had researched over 50 different attraction sites that one can visit and get thrilled.

Watching all these wonderful places on Tv and seeing people make post on IG for me was not enough. I wanted to be there, I wanted to feel same measure of excitement, I wanted to get in touch with nature, I wanted that warmth and nostalgia, truthfully, my expectations on a daily was really running wild.

I still had Exceptions, I mean, just after finishing service, allowee (monthly stipends) too won’t be forth coming as usual, but how do I satisfy my long-desired cravings still with my low-budget and minimal plan.

I finally came to a conclusion, so here are my forever top 7 fun places to visit in Lagos.

1. LEKKI CONSERVATION CENTRE

If you are a nature lover, then this is the right spot for you. This is a natural habitat for wildlife and aside the wonderful animals to view, this place is indeed a sight to behold. There are lot of interesting things to do at LCC which includes sightseeing, canopy walk, tree hous on top of the tallest iroko tree, the swamp lookout station, there are also tons of games to play like the life size chess, ludo, draught, snake and ladder and lots more. Asides this, you can decide to just chill in the popular koi and tilapia fish ponds, barbecue joint and a step down coconut drink. There is lot more than you can ask for.

2. KAPADOCCIA

I call this place, my seceret hide out. This is my favorite hideout.  This is Nigeria’s first and only restaurant situated in Victoria Island in Lagos. This restaurant serves mouthwatering cuisines and intercontinental dishes. This place offers its customers unsual experiences. With its turkish themed design designs, it gives people the vibes and feeling of being in turkey. So it’s actually you visiting turkey while you are still in Nigeria, LOL!.

This place has been given so much credit for its ambience, architectural design, cuisines, customer service, and its affordability as well. No kidding! Pasta cost 10k and cocktail is almost 5k. For me it’s a 10 over 10. And most importantly, flat shoes and slippers are not allowed for ladies, You have to rock your beautiful heels.

5. TAKWA BAY BEACH

This is an an exhilarating atmosphere to feel. The warm breeze, the cosy ocean, the sound of water clapping beautifully at your feet. This beach is a complete ‘oasis’ from the noise and chaos of Lagos. You would agree with me that most times especially if you stay in Lagos, you seriously need a breather and this is a highly recommended place to ease your stress. I remember my first vacation to Takwa bay at night, I really never wanted to leave, I truly enjoyed every moment and i’m most certain you would too.

6. EPE RESORT AND SPA

This is also one of the many beautiful resorts in Lagos and this resort is located in the coastal town of Epe. Epe resort is the perfect destinatino for corporate events, destination weddings, honey moons, hangouts, picnics etc. If you need a vacation or a baecation as the case maybe, then this is the right location for you. It is also equipped with a spa, neat and exotic rooms. This is a perfect get away for you and your friends, family and spouses.

Takwa Bay Fun Places to Visit in Lagos Nigeria Bellafricana

7. LAKOWE LAKES AND GOLF RESORT

Lakowe lakes and golf resorts is situated in the heart of Epe. Lakowe Lakes is the perfect place for a quiet & restful getaway. The resort area has different accommodation types (cabins, 1, 2 & 3 bedroom apartments) while the residential area has some units being used as shortlet apartments. The golf course itself is full fledged and well maintained, a perfect attraction for golfers. Some activities such as cycling (bikes provided by the resort), pedal boating and table tennis are complimentary for lodgers while additional activities such as bird watching, golf lectures for beginners and “bonfire night” are available but at a fee.

There aren’t that many things to do once at the resort but perhaps that’s the whole idea I.e. a focus on rest and relaxation. The food is pricey but tastes amazing. Lakowe is perfect for activities like cycling, morning runs, evening walks. Food-wise, you have the option of buying from the resort itself or the on-site restaurant (called The Wine Bar). Generally the staff are courteous and attentive.

On the flip side, their menu items are quite limited and also quite pricey. There’s no gym on the resort (though I understand same is under construction) and the activities list needs to be expanded a bit to prevent boredom. Overall however, it’s a lovely place and definitely recommend but for a short stay (say 3 days or a weekend).

Victoria Falls, shared by Zimbabwe on the south and Zambia on the north is the largest sheet of falling water, the largest waterfall and one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world!

Everything about this place already sounds so amazing as it is actually one of the most beautiful places in Africa! Known as “the smoke that thunders”, it is one of Africa’s greatest wonders as it can be seen over 40 kilometers away; a perfect place for an extraordinary, safari vacation.

Spending your vacation here, you can go swimming in the Devil’s Pool which is naturally formed pool just on the edge of the fall, witness the lunar rainbow that appears under the light of the full moon; one of Africa’s most distinctive sight.

You can  also witness the Victorian Falls Rainforest on the Zimbabwean side which is actually the only rainforest in the world where it rains every single day (I never knew this was actually possible).

During the day, you can go for a walk with rhinos (sounds interesting), go bungee jumping between Zimbabwe and Zambia, or go on micro-light flights above the fall.

Also home to elephants, lions, Buffalos, zebras, kudu, the rare rhino, cheetahs, hyenas, Eland and so many others, you get to witness exotic wildlife in Chobe National Park, Victoria Falls National Park or the Zambezi National Park.

The Valley of the Kings is also another beautiful place to visit not just because it was a resting place for the Kings but, also because of its main attraction; wall paintings (there is a story behind it so you will just have to find out when you get there).

Other notable places to visit are Luxor Temple, Tomb of Nerfertari, Medinet Habu, Luxor Temple, Tombs of the Nobles, Ramesseum, Colossi of Memnon, Temple of Abydos, and so on. Tips For Visiting Marrakesh During Ramadan

With Ramadan generally meaning a wind-down all over the Muslim world, you might expect that the red city of Marrakesh shuts up shop for the month, but that isn’t exactly the case. While the holy month means that many in Muslim-majority Morocco will be fasting during daylight hours, that doesn’t mean that Marrakesh is in any way off limits (though it might make finding an end-of-the-day beer a bit harder).

For travellers, the main difference will be the shortened opening hours, as many business and sights close either earlier in the day or for a chunk of the evening as Muslims gather together to break fast in a meal known as iftar. Here are some tips on visiting Marrakesh during Ramadan.

Enjoy the quiet streets

Much of Marrakesh’s old city will be quieter during the days in Ramadan as locals choose to spend the fasting days relaxed at home and then venture out at night. For those put off by medina crowds, it could be an excellent time to traverse winding streets that would otherwise be swamped. Food markets get busy again during the afternoon as people prepare for the large evening meal.

Find an iftar dinner

Stories abound of travellers being called in off the street by friendly Moroccans for the nightly iftar celebrations when Muslims break the day’s fast with a communal meal. Whilst serendipity might strike for you, if you want a definite dinner, it’s best to look at local restaurants. Noted culture-hub-turned-restaurant Cafe Clock offers a nightly iftarbuffet for Dh70 a head.

Dry month?

While not impossible, alcohol will be harder to find all over the country during Ramadan with some Muslims refusing to even touch the bottles during the holy month. Larger hotels aimed at tourists are likely to still serve booze though many smaller bars will close for the period or stay open while not serving alcohol. The popular 68 Bar A Vin, as one example, will close for the whole month. Supermarket alcohol shops will sometimes be open but might ask to see your passport as proof you’re not a local. The extra hassle means it might not be a bad idea to spend the trip sober; swap your end-of-the-day beer for a stop at the juice carts on the Marrakesh’s central Djemaa El Fna square.

Move your action to the night time

Though the quiet days and rising temperatures might give the city a listless feel during Ramadan, Marrakesh will very much come alive again at night. Many Muslims, having broken fast at sundown, will then head out to meet with friends and family late into the evening. Consider indulging in the greatest of past times: the afternoon nap, and then staying up later into the night as Djemaa El Fna and the nouvelle ville fill up with full stomached Moroccans looking for a friends and fun.

Tourism The Beauty Of Africa – 3 Things To Do In Cairo

Cairo, Egypt’s sprawling capital, is set on the Nile River. At its heart is Tahrir Square and the vast Egyptian Museum, a trove of antiquities including royal mummies and gilded King Tutankhamun artifacts. Nearby, Giza is the site of the iconic pyramids and Great Sphinx, dating to the 26th century BC. In Gezira Island’s leafy Zamalek district, 187m Cairo Tower affords panoramic city views. Apart from these really cool ”serious” stuff, there are so many fun hings to do in the beautiful capital of Egypt, and I have highlighted 3 things you should definitely do when you get to Cairo.

1. Take a hike

From late March to early June, temperatures in Cairo are springtime perfection, wavering around a median 30°C. The trees are in bloom, students are finishing exams and Cairenes are all smiles and more relaxed. Take in the carefree vibe with a walk through downtown’s cluttered maze, along the breezy Corniche or around Zamalek’s leafy streets. Beware of April’s sporadic sand storms and thunderstorms; if the sky turns a dusty colour, it’s time to duck indoors.

2. Drop in on an arts festival

D-CAF, Cairo’s three-week Downtown Contemporary Art Festival, runs to late April, and it’s spread over multiple sites downtown. The festival fuses performing arts with film, photography and urban vision workshops run by top artists and educators from around the world. Expect cross-genre mashing, such as ‘interactive dance calligraphy performance’. Check out the concert photography workshop, which promises to teach the skill of the ‘killer shot’, or a new media arts workshop, such as the 3D projection mapping audio visual performance training. If you prefer to sit back and take in a film, save a night in mid-May for an art house film at Zawya, which hosts the Cairo Cinema Days festival, showcasing around 40 contemporary award-winning feature and documentary films from across the Arab region. The festival also screens some historic heavy hitter films and has panels and Q&A sessions with filmmakers.

3. Scout out contemporary Egypt in Old Cairo

Old Cairo is home to a trove of historic wonders, from the 7th-century Hanging Church of Coptic Cairo to the millennium-old Mosque of Amr Ibn Al As. But within the Fustat area of Old Cairo stands Darb 1718, an outdoor contemporary art and culture centre that in springtime weather, is the perfect place to spend an afternoon. The centre hosts live music concerts, fashion, art exhibitions, open-mic nights and education workshops. This spring you can get your hands dirty with a pottery workshop and or learn about light refraction and shutter speed at a photography class. April’s hieroglyphics workshop is sure to be a hit.

What other things do you love to do, or are you looking to do in Cairo? Feel free to leave a comment.
