[dropcap custom_class=”normal”] Child hair care is not as easy as it seems but also isn’t as difficult as it looks. In this post, I am going to help you begin your journey in figuring out exactly what your child’s hair needs. If you do not already know me, my name is Luchi the founder of the Muna & Luchi Hair Care Brand, I help young mothers, like me, take charge of caring for their children’s hair. … [/dropcap]
Before we begin, I would like to give you a little gift, it is called the 30 Day Hair Care Regimen Plan. This plan is meant to guide you, each and every day, to stay in your A Game in caring for your child’s hair. Click here to download it.
I want you to know that I am determined to teach as many moms, grandmas and daddies how to care for and nurture their little curly African baby’s hair. I am particularly touched when I see African moms get overwhelmed with their child’s hair care and all I want to do is help them.
Therefore my major goal over the next few days, is to arm you with the foundational truths about your child’s hair care and teach you how to know some things you can do in order to salvage it from damage. On the last day of this email course.
I am also going to answer the top 5 most common questions I get from mothers about child hair care.
Is it almost your baby’s first birthday and you’re wondering what happened to that thick dark curly hair she was born with? Have you spent so much money on baby hair care products and not seen any results or received your money’s worth? Or you just want to know why your baby’s hair is falling out and you can’t seem to help it?
I know we have all these questions in our minds but in the course of the next five weeks, we are going to debunk them one by one, all we need is a little information and a few changes in our child hair care methods then we will be on our way to great baby hair.
Babies start growing hair before they are born, from the 30th week of pregnancy, hair starts to grow on a baby’s head. Most African babies are born with good, healthy hair, be it a head full of beautiful dark baby curls or just a head made up of a couple of strands, it doesn’t matter, the child’s hair is healthy from start.
Some babies are also born bald, some who were born with a full head of hair may even tend to lose their birth hair before their first birthday. This is perfectly normal as the child will likely spot a full head of hair by their second birthday.
Here’s a fun fact though: More African babies are born with a full head of hair than Caucasian babies. I bet you never thought of that, ha!
A strand of the African hair is coily in nature and in cross section, is flat or oval shaped as opposed to the Caucasian hair texture which is straight and has a rounded cross section.
This coily nature of the afro hair, is what makes it fragile and susceptible to dryness and breakage.
The reason for its coily nature is because the hole on the scalp through which the hair strand comes through, called the follicle, is shaped like a semi-circle, having a flat side and a rounded side.
There are about 100,000 hair follicles on a child’s scalp and as they grow, their hair density reduces because follicles are not formed as the scalp expands. Each strand in a baby’s hair also gets its natural oiling through the follicle by the secretion, from the scalp, of a natural oil called sebum.
The kinks and coils of the afro hair, creates a tortious path for the oiling process and makes it a little difficult to be distributed properly thereby making the afro hair more susceptible to dryness.
Another very important thing to note is that your child’s afro hair grows at a rate about 0.5 inch a month, so that means, all things being equal, your child will only grow an inch of hair in two months!
So now we know a little bit more about our child’s birth and natural hair, I want to ask you a question. I would like to know, what is the big reason why you really want to grow your child’s healthy hair?
