Exclusive Interview with Titilayo Amoo, Founder of RTW_by_Teetee

How this Nigerian designer, Titilayo Amoo, founder of RTW_by_TeeTee  is redefining ready-to-wear fashion with African heritage and modern flair

RTW_by_Teetee is a fashion brand inspired by African heritage and vibrant self-expression. Founded by Titilayo Amoo, the brand celebrates boldness, confidence, and individuality through African-inspired ready-to-wear clothing.

From her love for Ankara and Adire fabrics to her passion for storytelling through design, Titilayo’s journey is a vibrant fusion of culture, creativity, and courage. Her story is one of resilience and artistic rebirth, proof that fashion can be more than style; it can be a statement of identity.

Exclusive Interview with Titilayo Amoo, Founder of RTW_by_Teetee

Please introduce yourself and your background

My name is Titilayo, the founder of RTW_by_Teetee. My journey into fashion started in 2019 when I fell in love with designing and sewing. Growing up in Nigeria, I was surrounded by the rich beauty of African prints, Ankara, Adire, and other fabrics that tell stories of who we are.

What truly sparked my journey was my desire for individuality. I’ve always loved wearing unique pieces, and I wasn’t satisfied with others sewing for me. So, I picked up a sewing machine and began creating my own designs, blending tradition with a modern twist.

In 2022, I moved to the UK to study, and while the experience was exciting, it came with its challenges. Being in a new country felt isolating at first. My sewing machine became more than just a creative tool; it became my escape, my connection to home, and my bridge to sharing African culture with the world.

Tell us about your brand. How did RTW_by_Teetee start?

Exclusive Interview with Titilayo Amoo, Founder of RTW_by_Teetee

RTW_by_Teetee officially started as a creative passion project, a way to express my individuality and love for African culture. “RTW” stands for ready-to-wear, and “Teetee” is a nickname derived from my name, Titilayo, which means “eternal joy” in Yoruba. The name reflects my personal journey and the happiness I find in creating designs that empower others to express themselves boldly.

From its humble beginnings in 2019, the brand has grown into a celebration of African creativity and craftsmanship. Each piece I design is meant to inspire confidence while staying true to the cultural stories embedded in every fabric.

How did you come up with the brand name RTW_by_Teetee, and what does it represent?

Like I said earlier, the name RTW_by_Teetee is deeply personal. “Teetee” reflects my name and the essence of joy that drives my creativity. The “RTW” stands for ready-to-wear, which embodies my mission to make African-inspired pieces that are stylish, accessible, and versatile.

Together, the name represents more than fashion; it’s about identity, heritage, and expression. Every collection is designed to make people feel bold, confident, and connected to something meaningful.

What makes RTW_by_Teetee stand out?

What sets RTW_by_Teetee apart is its seamless blend of African heritage and modern design. I celebrate the beauty of fabrics like Ankara and Adire, infusing them into contemporary silhouettes that appeal to the bold and confident.

Each piece tells a story, crafted with care, designed with authenticity, and made to be versatile for everyday wear or special occasions. It’s not just about fashion; it’s about sharing culture through creativity.

Exclusive Interview with Titilayo Amoo, Founder of RTW_by_Teetee

Exclusive Interview with Titilayo Amoo, Founder of RTW_by_Teetee

Where do you draw inspiration for your designs?

My inspiration comes from my Nigerian roots, the vibrant colours, the bold patterns, and the cultural richness of African prints. Growing up, I was surrounded by Adire and Ankara fabrics, each one carrying its own history and meaning.

These prints aren’t just textiles; they’re art forms. They symbolise identity, pride, and community. Every design I create is a love letter to that heritage, reimagined for the modern world.

Exclusive Interview with Titilayo Amoo, Founder of RTW_by_Teetee

What is your most popular product, and why does it resonate with people?

The Adire bomber jacket has become my signature piece. It’s a perfect example of tradition meeting modernity. Adire fabric carries the deep artistry of African craftsmanship, while the bomber jacket silhouette gives it a fresh, global appeal.

Each jacket is unique, a wearable piece of art that makes the wearer stand out while staying connected to their roots. My customers love that it’s bold, stylish, and effortlessly tells a story.

What challenges have you faced in your business journey?

One of the biggest challenges was starting afresh in a new environment after moving to the UK. I didn’t have a network or an audience, and there were moments of doubt. To stay grounded, I turned to sewing. Creating became my therapy, my escape, and my way of finding community through fashion.

Navigating the business side: marketing, branding, and audience building, was another learning curve. But through consistency, social media, and self-education, I’ve grown step by step. Each obstacle has shaped me into a stronger entrepreneur.

How has your cultural background influenced your brand?

My heritage is the heartbeat of RTW_by_Teetee. Every design celebrates African culture, from the fabrics to the storytelling behind them. Moving to the UK only deepened my appreciation for my roots—it pushed me to share my culture more intentionally.

Each collection is a reflection of where I come from, reminding me that fashion isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about preserving legacy.

Exclusive Interview with Titilayo Amoo, Founder of RTW_by_Teetee

What milestones are you most proud of?

One of my proudest moments has been showcasing my work at various pop-up markets in the UK. Seeing people from all backgrounds fall in love with African-inspired designs has been incredibly rewarding.

Each event is more than just a sales opportunity; it’s a cultural exchange. Watching people light up as they wear my designs reminds me why I started: to share joy, heritage, and confidence through fashion.

What’s next for RTW_by_Teetee?

The future is bright! I’m currently preparing for my 2025 Summit Collection Launch, a bold new line that will showcase African prints in modern, expressive ways.

In the long term, my goal is to take RTW_by_Teetee global, collaborating with other creatives, exploring new markets, and building a fashion movement that celebrates African heritage and individuality. Ultimately, I want the brand to be more than a label. I want it to be a statement of identity, culture, and pride.

What’s one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?

Many people don’t believe it when I say I sew all the pieces myself! Every stitch carries my personal touch. If I weren’t in fashion, I’d probably still be in a creative field; maybe interior or graphic design, because creativity is at the core of who I am.

If you could give one piece of advice to aspiring entrepreneurs, what would it be?

Stay authentic to your roots. Be consistent, keep learning, and don’t shy away from challenges. Growth happens when you step out of your comfort zone.

Fashion and entrepreneurship as a whole aren’t just about creating; it’s about believing in your story enough to share it with the world.

Outspok’n Clothiers at TALES 2025

An intimate look into the mind behind a label that believes fashion is more than what you wear, it’s who you are.Outspok’n Clothiers at TALES 2025

The Brand Stitching Culture, Confidence & Character into Modern African Fashion

Meet Adesola Balogun, not just a designer, but a mentor, author, podcaster, and visionary. The founder of Outspok’n Clothiers isn’t here to play it safe. His work is for those who are ready to be seen.

And at TALES 2025, Outspok’n is not just showing clothes. It’s showing character. It’s about boldness without noise, culture without cliché, and tailoring that tells stories.

Born from Expression, Rooted in Purpose

Before the brand, there was a young man with a talent for making clothes that made people feel like more of themselves.

What began as a side hustle at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, making shirts and kaftans for classmates, grew into something deeper. Adesola wasn’t just dressing people. He was helping them show up in confidence, in colour, and in full identity.

“I’ve always believed that clothes can give people a better image of themselves,” he shares.
“Not in a fake way, but in a way that reflects who they are, and who they’re becoming.”

Outspok’n was born out of that belief. A label that invites people to wear their values, not just their style.

Tailoring That Speaks Without Shouting

Outspok’n Clothiers at TALES 2025

There’s a balance to Adesola’s designs. A quiet intensity. Clean lines meet rich African textiles. Timeless cuts are elevated by textures like aso-oke and cotton. It’s not fashion for fashion’s sake. It’s intentional. Purpose-driven. Deeply expressive.

Take a moment with any piece from the Erè-Ayọ collection, a line inspired by joy, celebration, and African pride. Or look at the Osei capsule, honouring the role and strength of African fatherhood. Then there’s Skyline, a more architectural collection that mirrors the silhouette of cityscapes, urban, tall, and structured.

These aren’t just garments. They’re statements about family, identity, faith, and showing up fully in every room.

“Our fashion doesn’t scream, but it definitely doesn’t shrink.”

The Outspok’n Philosophy: Be Loud in Presence, Not in Noise

Adesola’s personal life and leadership style echo through the brand. He’s a strong advocate of emotional intelligence in business. His team operates on intentional mentorship, weekly check-ins, and community building.

He hosts a podcast (Coffee & Beans) where he unpacks the journey of entrepreneurship. He writes books. He mentors. But through it all, fashion remains the heartbeat.

For Adesola, it’s simple: “Outspok’n is ministry. This is how I serve.”

TALES 2025: A Global Stage for a Bold African Brand

This isn’t just another pop-up. TALES (The African Lifestyle Experience) is where craft, culture, and community come alive. And Outspok’n stands tall in the mix.

If you’re in London, this is your chance to experience the textures up close. Feel the fabrics. Try on the structure. Speak with Adesola. Hear the story straight from the man who made it.

When Life Gives You Lockdown, Make Candles: The Sweet Story Behind Essence by RJ

From Personal Experiment to Wellness Brand

The story of Essence by RJ is one that beautifully captures how personal struggles can birth something that brings healing not just to one person, but to many. Founded by Orume Oghenejode, Essence by RJ began during the unexpected stillness of the COVID-19 lockdown. Struggling with anxiety and unable to access her regular supply of candles, diffusers, and room sprays, Orume found herself turning to essential oils to create calming scents for her personal space.

What started as a deeply personal experiment soon caught the attention of friends and family. The positive feedback was consistent and encouraging, pushing Orume to explore the possibility of building something bigger. With gentle nudging from her mother, who was already active in the wellness space, Essence by RJ was officially born—a brand dedicated to bringing tranquillity and calm to others through the power of scent.

The Heart of the Brand: Wellness Through Fragrance

  • Corporate gifting solutions

Through these services, Essence by RJ creates memorable sensory experiences for both individuals and businesses, making wellness and self-care accessible on a larger scale.

What Sets Essence by RJ Apart?

While many brands create scented products, Essence by RJ distinguishes itself through its intentional approach to scent as therapy. For Orume, fragrance is not just about making a space smell nice; it’s about creating emotional harmony. Each product is carefully crafted to soothe, uplift, and ground its user.

Moreover, the brand’s flexibility in offering bespoke scent solutions allows businesses, hotels, and spas to customise the atmosphere they offer to their clients, making wellness an immersive and tailored experience.

BLAQ ESSENCE is redefining footwear with a range of handcrafted leather shoes and accessories designed to blend traditional craftsmanship with contemporary style. Founded in Lagos, the brand specialises in premium leather footwear solutions, from bold platform sandals to sophisticated everyday pieces that celebrate African heritage while meeting modern fashion demands. Each product is expertly crafted by skilled local artisans, offering a luxury alternative that solves sizing problems, ensures durability, and delivers timeless elegance.

BLAQ ESSENCE was founded by Dupe Gani S. with a clear mission: to create handcrafted footwear that empowers individuals to embrace bold, Afro-centric style without compromising on quality or comfort. Motivated by her grandmother’s legacy as a shoe seller and her own journey through entrepreneurial challenges, Dupe began her footwear journey after her clothing brand faced difficulties.

“My grandmother was a shoe seller! Growing up with her, she would travel to Abidjan to buy rubber shoes and distribute them to the market women,” Dupe recalls. “I fell in love with the cuteness of footwear and their designs and colours. The love for footwear sprang from there.”

After trying different businesses and facing failures, Dupe found her calling when native wear clients began asking her to pair their outfits with handmade shoes. What started as research during her travels became a full commitment to footwear design immediately after COVID-19. By 2021, BLAQ ESSENCE was born, and as Dupe puts it, “It has been amazing ever since!”

From Childhood Dreams to a Lagos Footwear Powerhouse

In 2021, BLAQ ESSENCE embarked on a mission to redefine handcrafted footwear in Nigeria. What began with memories of a grandmother’s shoe business has blossomed into one of Lagos’s most distinctive premium footwear brands. Ruutos: The African Hair Care Brand Championing Natural Beauty from Root to Tip

In a world where beauty standards often prioritise straight, Eurocentric hair textures, one African brand is boldly rewriting the narrative, strand by strand. Ruutos isn’t just selling hair products; it’s building confidence, preserving heritage, and empowering individuals to embrace the fullness of their natural crown.

What began as a small dream in a one-bedroom apartment has blossomed into a professional-grade hair care brand trusted across the continent. With deep roots in science, community, and culture, Ruutos is leading the charge in transforming how African hair is nurtured, styled, and celebrated.

The Story Behind Ruutos

Ruutos is redefining hair care with a range of products designed to nourish, style, and celebrate natural hair. Formulated in South Africa, the brand specialises in natural hair care solutions—shampoos, conditioners, treatments, and stylers—that protect and enhance the beauty of every hair type, from textured curls to straight strands. Each product is expertly crafted to harness the power of natural ingredients, offering a safe, chemical-free alternative that improves hair texture, strengthens strands, and boosts shine.

Ruutos was founded by Ruben and Lucy Okpoko with a clear mission: to create natural haircare products that empower individuals to embrace and love their hair in its natural state. Motivated by the lack of chemical-free options available in the market, the couple began experimenting with natural ingredients in their own kitchen. By testing their formulas on themselves and close friends, they were able to develop high-quality, effective products that delivered real results.

As word of their creations spread, what began as a personal project quickly evolved into a trusted brand in the natural hair care industry. Today, Ruutos offers a comprehensive range of products and remains deeply committed to the values on which it was built—authenticity, innovation, and a deep respect for natural beauty.

From Humble Beginnings to a Pan-African Hair Care Powerhouse

In 2008, Ruutos embarked on a mission to redefine natural hair care. What began in a modest one-bedroom apartment has blossomed into one of Africa’s leading professional hair care brands. Rooted in faith, resilience, and love, Ruutos has become a beacon for those seeking to embrace their natural hair with confidence and pride.

What Makes The Ruutos Unique?

Ruutos is unique because it is the first African-made professional hair care product that doesn’t compromise on quality, and it is formulated for different hair and scalp types.

The Ruutos Philosophy: Empowerment Through Hair Care
Ruutos is more than just a hair care brand; it’s a community. Their philosophy centres on empowering individuals to embrace their natural hair textures—be it coily, curly, kinky, or wavy. By offering products crafted specifically for these hair types, Ruutos ensures that every strand receives the care it deserves.
Product Excellence: Science Meets Nature
Manufactured in South Africa, Ruutos’ product line is a harmonious blend of natural ingredients and scientific innovation. Their offerings cater to various hair needs, including:

  • Leave-In Conditioners & Hair Butters: Designed to moisturise and define curls.
  • Hair Oils & Stylers: Formulated to protect and style, ensuring longevity and shine.
Each product is meticulously crafted to address specific hair concerns, from dryness and breakage to scalp sensitivity.

Tunde Onakoya: Moving Africa Forward Through Chess

When Craft Becomes a Legacy

In the spirit of celebrating Africans whose impact transcends their craft or business, Bellafricana proudly celebrates Tunde Onakoya: a visionary whose impact extends beyond the 64 squares of a chessboard. Tunde’s story isn’t just one of personal triumph; it’s a powerful narrative of using skill, resilience, and compassion to rewrite the future for hundreds of children across Africa.

Tunde Onakoya with Children in Slums

From Ikorodu to the World

Tunde’s story begins in Ikorodu, Lagos, not even in a classroom or a well-lit office, but in a humble barbershop where he first encountered the game of chess. What started as a spark of curiosity soon turned into a lifelong mission: to unlock potential where the world only saw poverty.

Armed with his love for the game and a heart for service, Tunde founded Chess in Slums Africa. This was an initiative that teaches chess to children in underserved communities while also helping them access education, mentorship, and life-changing opportunities.

But this is more than just about teaching kids to play a game. It’s about helping them see themselves differently as thinkers, strategists, and leaders. It’s about rewriting the script that says, “Because you’re from the slums, your dreams don’t matter.”

Tunde Onakoya perfectly embodies the essence of #BeyondTheCraft. His mission transcends his personal expertise in chess; it’s about legacy, impact, and the reimagination of African potential. Through strategic thinking, storytelling, and relentless service, he has turned a simple game into a global instrument of change.

Making Global Moves

Tunde’s impact has gone far beyond the slums of Lagos. In April 2024, he took to Times Square in New York City, where he played chess for 60 hours nonstop, not for personal glory, but to raise $1 million for children’s education across Africa.

And just recently, in 2025, he took the message even further, delivering a keynote address at the United Nations Headquarters, sharing his story and the possibilities that lie in investing in Africa’s future through its children.

From street corners to global stages, Tunde has shown that a simple idea, when driven by purpose, can ripple across continents.

Why Tunde Onakoya is Beyond the Craft

At first glance, chess may seem far removed from the creative industries we highlight at Bellafricana. But that’s exactly why this spotlight matters.

Tunde represents everything Beyond the Craft stands for: turning passion into purpose, skill into social impact, and vision into legacy. He has taken what he knows and built something that transforms lives, challenges stereotypes, and champions Africa in rooms where our voices aren’t always heard.

He reminds us that creativity isn’t just what we make with our hands; it’s what we build with our hearts.

The Bigger Picture

Beyond the Craft is about more than recognition. It’s about reminding ourselves and the world that Africa’s greatness lies in its people. The ones who see possibilities where others see problems. The ones who use their platform, whatever it may be, to lift others as they rise.

Tunde Onakoya is doing just that, and we’re proud to celebrate him, not just for what he’s done, but for what he represents: the power of vision, purpose, and unwavering belief in the next generation.

At Bellafricana, Beyond the Craft is our way of honouring Africans like Tunde, whose work has created ripple effects far beyond their immediate industry. He is not just a chess master; he is a master of change, reshaping narratives, breaking boundaries, and inspiring a generation to dream bigger.

Exclusive Interview with Gladys Mojoyinola, Founder of Joyin Afrochic

Afrocentric Fashion Designer

Joyin Afrochic is a fashion brand redefining Afrocentric elegance through modern, ready-to-wear designs. Inspired by founder Mojoyinola’s rich heritage and creative passion, the brand blends tradition with innovation to celebrate African culture with style, confidence, and purpose.

Meet Abiodun Gladys Mojoyinola founder of Joyin Afrochic a brand that celebrates Afrocentric elegance through unique, ready-to-wear fashion

Please introduce yourself and your background
I’ve always had a deep love for creativity, and it started as far back as my secondary school days. During Home Economics classes, I discovered my passion for crafting and creating. I was one of the leading students when it came to showcasing creativity, and I still remember how proud I felt when one of my projects was featured during an end-of-the-year party. One moment that stands out vividly was in my senior class. I decided to sew my school uniform by hand, a bold experiment that I kept to myself. When my dad noticed the uniform, he was so impressed that he took it to a tailor for measurements for a new one.
The tailor was amazed and encouraged my dad to take my talent seriously, suggesting I pursue fashion design. When I started higher education, my dad showed his support by buying me my first sewing machine. At the time, I didn’t fully grasp the opportunity I had, but over time, I grew more passionate, especially about Afrocentric fashion. Today, I look back with gratitude at how those small moments of creativity shaped my path. They ignited my passion for designing and inspired me to turn that passion into a purposeful journey of blending art, culture, and style.

How did you come about the brand name, and what does it mean?
Joyin Afrochic is a brand that celebrates Afrocentric elegance through unique, ready-to-wear fashion. Our designs are deeply inspired by African culture, heritage, and artistry, blended with modern sophistication to create timeless pieces that empower and inspire. The business name JoyinAfrochic holds special meaning to me. “Joyin” is drawn from my middle name, Mojoyinola, which means “I enjoy wealth.” It symbolises abundance, creativity, and the joy of creating something meaningful. “Afrochic” reflects the heart of my brand, highlighting the beauty and vibrancy of African culture while adding a chic, modern twist.
Together, the name represents my vision to merge tradition with innovation, creating a brand that proudly tells our stories through fashion. This brand was born out of my lifelong passion for creativity and a desire to honour my roots. I want every piece from Joyin Afrochic to inspire confidence and pride in our culture while remaining versatile and elegant for everyday wear.
What makes your business stand out?

What sets us apart is our authenticity and accessibility. Inspired by African artistry, we proudly serve customers both online and offline, ensuring that everyone can embrace the beauty of our culture, no matter where they are. Joyin Afrochic isn’t just a brand; it’s a celebration of heritage, boldness, pride, and timeless style.

Where do you get the inspiration for your products?

I grew up in Osogbo Town, a place rich in culture and artistry. Behind my house was the Niki Gallery, where creative art dances and exhibitions were a regular occurrence. From a young age, I was surrounded by traditional art and design, particularly the creation of Adire and Kampala fabrics. I remember watching people sketch patterns on cloth using candle wax and vibrant dyes and even had an aunt who learnt the craft in Osogbo. These experiences sparked my interest in Afrocentric creativity and opened my eyes to the beauty of traditional techniques. Growing up in such an environment shaped my passion for blending heritage with modern design in everything I create.

What’s your most popular product, and why does it resonate with your audience?
My most popular product has been my jackets, crafted from Aso Oke, Adire, and Akara prints. These collections have been a consistent favourite, selling out so quickly that most of them never even make it to our social media or Instagram page. Many sales come through referrals and returning customers, which speaks volumes about their quality and appeal. What makes these jackets stand out is their uniqueness and craftsmanship. Each piece is neatly designed, carefully maintained, and thoughtfully packaged, ensuring a premium experience for the buyer. Their seamless blending of Afrocentric elegance with modern functionality makes them ideal for both corporate and social settings. The loyalty of my customers and the speed at which these jackets sell are a testament to the brand’s commitment to quality, culture, and timeless style. These jackets truly capture the heart of JoyinAfrochic, where tradition meets innovation.
What are some of the challenges you face in your business?

One of the biggest challenges I faced was while running my management master’s program in the UK, alongside managing my business back home in Nigeria. Juggling both my studies and my business was tough, especially being in a different country. The pressure of balancing academics with the day-to-day operations of my business sometimes felt overwhelming. However, I learned to focus on one thing at a time, giving each priority the attention it needed. The Bella Africana community was also a great support during this time. They helped me balance everything by offering valuable guidance, resources, and a sense of community that kept me motivated. I realized that by staying organised and being patient with myself, I could manage both without compromising the quality of either. It wasn’t easy, but I was able to sustain and overcome this challenge, and now I’m grateful for the experience. It taught me the importance of time management, perseverance, and adaptability.

How has your heritage or cultural background influenced your brand and products?

Each piece in my collection blends tradition with modern elegance, reflecting my journey and honouring the beauty of African creativity. JoyinAfrochic is more than just a brand; it’s a celebration of our heritage and culture.

What are some of your proudest milestones since starting your business?

One of my proudest milestones is the consistent success of my jacket collections, which often sell out through referrals and returning customers before making it to social media. Balancing my management master’s degree in the UK while running my business was another significant achievement, teaching me resilience and focus. Joining the Bellafricana community has also been a highlight, providing valuable support and growth opportunities. These milestones have shaped my journey and strengthened my passion for Afrocentric fashion through Joyin Afrochic

What’s next for your brand? What are your short-term and long-term goals?
In the short term, I’m focused on launching new Afrocentric collections and expanding my online presence to reach a global audience. In the long term, I aim to make JoyinAfrochic a globally recognised brand through international collaborations, partnerships, and a broader product range. My vision is to celebrate African heritage and inspire pride through bold, elegant designs.
If you could describe your brand’s mission in one sentence, what would it be?
To celebrate African heritage by creating bold, elegant, and authentic Afrocentric designs that inspire pride and connect tradition with modernity
What’s one thing people would be surprised to learn about you as a founder?
Many people might be surprised to learn that I sewed my first school uniform by hand when I was in secondary school. My dad was so impressed that he took it to a tailor, who couldn’t believe I had made it myself! That early passion for designing and creating laid the foundation for my journey into fashion. I don’t take no for an answer—whenever a task seems difficult, I always find a way to overcome it, and this resilience has been key in building my brand.
If you weren’t in this industry, what do you think you’d be doing?

If I weren’t in this area of fashion, I’d still be involved in the industry, whether through styling, consulting, or exploring new fashion innovations. Fashion is my true passion, and I’ll always find a way to stay connected to it.”

What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs looking to take their business to the global stage?
Consistency is Key

10 Reasons Why Many Creative Businesses Fail Within the First 3 Years – And How to Avoid Them

Hey, friend! Let’s talk. You’ve got this fantastic creative business idea, right? You’re passionate, talented, and ready to take on the world. But here’s something we don’t discuss enough, why many creative businesses fail  within their first three years! As one who has been in the creative business for over a decade, I can assure you that this issue can be avoided if you take the right steps.

It’s not because people aren’t talented. I mean, you and I both know some insanely gifted creatives out there. But talent alone doesn’t keep a business running. There’s a whole business side to this thing, and if you ignore it, you’re setting yourself up for struggle.

I don’t want that for you. So let’s get into the 10 biggest reasons why many creative businesses fail—and, more importantly, how to avoid them.

1. Thinking Creativity Alone Is Enough

You’re good at what you do, I know that. Maybe you’re a fantastic fashion designer, an incredible artist, or a genius at making handcrafted pieces. But here’s the thing: being talented at your craft doesn’t automatically make you a great entrepreneur, nor does it mean you will begin to smash massive sales. I wish that would be the case, honestly. A lot of creatives struggle because they don’t understand pricing, marketing, or financial management. And before they know it, they’re burnt out, broke, or both.

How to Fix This:

  • Learn the business side of things. Trust me, it’ll save you a lot of stress later. Take online courses, read business books, or even get a mentor.
  • Surround yourself with business-minded people. Join communities like Bellafricana’s creative family. Being around like-minded entrepreneurs makes a huge difference.
  • Treat your business like a business. That means tracking your expenses, knowing your numbers, and having a plan.

2. Poor Branding and Positioning

Let’s be real: if your brand doesn’t stand out, people won’t remember you. And if they don’t remember you, they won’t buy from you.

zero branding

Branding isn’t just about having a fancy logo or cool packaging. It’s about how people feel when they see your brand. Does your business have a clear message? Do you know what makes you unique? So, if someone comes across your social media page, what is that thing that makes you stand out, and how does your brand make them feel?

How to Fix This:

  • Figure out your Unique Selling Point (USP). What makes you different? Why should people choose you over someone else?
  • Invest in professional branding. And no, I don’t mean just throwing a logo together in Canva. Your brand should have a consistent look and feel across all platforms.
  • Be consistent. Whether it’s your social media presence, your website, or even how you interact with customers, make sure your brand is instantly recognizable.

3. Inconsistent Marketing

I see this mistake all the time; in fact, I get bored when I see a post from an inconsistent brand. Another reason why many creative businesses fail is because they post once in a blue moon, then vanishing for weeks, how do you expect your customers to take you seriously? Or relying on word-of-mouth alone, hoping people will magically find your business. Really?

Friend, let me tell you: if you’re not consistently marketing, you’re losing money!

How to Fix This:

  • Create a content plan and stick to it. You don’t have to post daily but don’t disappear for weeks either.
  • Start an email list. Social media algorithms change, but emails go directly to your customers.
  • Consider ads. Even a small budget for Instagram or Facebook ads can get you in front of new customers.

4. Not Knowing Who Your Ideal Customer Is

You can’t sell to “everyone.” If you try to, you’ll end up selling to no one. If you don’t know who your ideal customer is, your marketing efforts will be all over the place. That feels like a lot of work; it’s better to know your ideal customers so you can streamline your effort in positioning your brand.

How to Fix This:

  • Get clear on your audience. Who are they? What do they struggle with? Where do they hang out online?
  • Speak their language. If your brand is fun and youthful, let that reflect in your messaging. If it’s more luxury-focused, make sure your branding and communication match.
  • Solve a problem. People don’t just buy products—they buy solutions. What problem does your brand solve?

5. Financial Mismanagement

work overload

Let’s talk money! Because I know that so many creatives avoid this topic. Mixing personal and business finances, underpricing your products, or spending recklessly can kill your business before it even gets a chance to grow.

How to Fix This:

  • Open a separate business account. Stop mixing business money with personal money—it’s a recipe for disaster.
  • Pay yourself a salary. Even if it’s small at first, get into the habit of treating yourself like an employee.
  • Track your expenses and income. You don’t need fancy software; Google Sheets can work just fine. But know your numbers.

6. Being Afraid to Sell

Feeling of distress

Let’s be honest, does selling make you uncomfortable? Do you feel like you’re being “too pushy” when promoting your products? I know a few business owners who felt this way when they just started out in their business.

Here’s the truth: if you don’t sell, you don’t make money. Simple. This is another solid reason Why Many Creative Businesses Fail.

How to Fix This:

  • Change your mindset. Selling isn’t about being annoying; it’s about offering value. I know nobody likes to be sold to, but if you truly believe in your product, why wouldn’t you share it?
  • Make irresistible offers. People love deals, bundles, and exclusivity. Give them a reason to buy now.
  • Engage with your audience. Don’t just post products—connect with people, ask questions, and create relationships.

7. Not Adapting to Change

Markets evolve, trends shift, and customer needs change. If you’re stuck doing the same thing year after year without adapting, your business will struggle. People fear change, and that’s a valid feeling; however, that’s not enough reason to remain stuck.

How to Fix This:

  • Stay updated with industry trends. Follow influencers, read blogs, and watch what’s happening in your niche.
  • Listen to your customers. Their feedback is gold. Pay attention to what they want.
  • Be willing to pivot. If something isn’t working, change it!

8. No Business Structure

Business owner without a business structure Why Many Creative Businesses Fail

Running a business without systems is chaotic. It’s like starting out on a journey without knowing where you are going; any way may seem cool to follow. If you don’t have clear processes, things will slip through the cracks, and growth will feel impossible.

How to Fix This:

  • Set up simple systems for sales, customer service, and product fulfillment.
  • Automate where you can—use tools like Trello, Dubsado, or Zapier.
  • Document your processes so it’s easier to scale.

9. Trying to Do Everything Alone

Why Many Creative Businesses Fail, one reason is Burnout from working

You don’t have to do it all. Seriously. Trying to handle everything by yourself leads to burnout and slow growth. This burnout is one of the strongest reasons why many business owners quit because they can’t function at their optimal level.

How to Fix This:

  • Delegate. If social media isn’t your thing, hire a social media manager. If bookkeeping stresses you out, get an accountant.
  • Outsource tasks. Platforms like Fiverr or Upwork have freelancers who can help.
  • Collaborate with other creatives—it makes business more fun and less overwhelming.

10. Giving Up Too Soon

This one breaks my heart. So many talented creatives quit right before they start seeing results. Success takes time, and there’s no such thing as an “overnight success.” While others may have their business running from the onset, yours may take a slow pace, and that’s okay. In fact, giving up too soon may also be a result of comparison.

How to Fix This:

  • Be patient. Keep showing up, even when it feels like nothing is happening.
  • Track progress and celebrate small wins. Every sale, every happy customer—it all counts.
  • Stay connected to a support system. Surround yourself with people who encourage you to keep going.

I know building a creative business isn’t easy, but I also know you can do this, now that you know the reasons why many creative businesses fail. With the right mindset, strategy, and consistency, you can turn your passion into a profitable brand. Take it from someone who has scaled through the hurdles.
