It’s the season for gifting

It's the season for gifting

It’s the season for gifting and I won’t lie, I love receiving gifts [lol]. Who doesn’t? I am yet to meet anyone who doesn’t like to receive a gift. Even the “tough guys” would admit to receiving gifts, especially if they get what they truly want or like. That said, Christmas is around the corner and most people have started shopping for their loved ones, friends and even companies. If you haven’t started, then pay close attention. This is for you. Late shopping can be overwhelming and expensive, I know from experience.

Okay, let’s focus [lol]. Whilst I believe that in gifting, thoughts behind the gifts matter, I also believe that the gifts should be worth it or at least be something of value to the person receiving them. It could be something of sentimental value or even money [if the person wishes to trade it in later…]. The point is, know who you are gifting.

I’ve listed out a few gift items that I believe never run out of style. To see more of each brands product, all you have to do is click on the name of the brand. Let’s get started.

Cards

The right card can leave one swooning and it has the right amount of sentimental value for any occasion. Like these ones below

Skincare Products

Taking a line from Fatima Mernissi, “Beauty is in the skin! Take care of it, oil it, clean it, scrub it…” which is why this serves as a great gift, especially if it comes as a set, such as the product below.

Modara Naturals - Skincare gifts

The product shown above, which is called Asakwa means ‘bathe’ in the Igbo language, is a rich black soap made from an ancient West African recipe. This blend is infused with Turmeric, an age-old Asian ingredient, known to brighten and even skin tone. It contains relaxing essential oils and helps in clearing breakouts on the face and body.

The skin is important and so is the hair and that is why this next product is a must-have, gift item.

Meet the Founder of Handmadepreneur-(Exclusive Interview).

Adewumi-Inenemo Aminah is the CEO of Handmadepreneur. An indigene of Ikare Akoko North East Ondo state, and a graduate of industrial chemistry. A mother of 5, whose passion to creatively design handmade bags emerged after passing through pains of getting good bags of her taste for her kids and then decided to take the bull by the horn. She is a multitasking individual, always willing to improve her skills, determined to have her impact felt in her immediate environment and the world at large.

MEET THE FOUNDER - HANDMADEPRENEUR
Adewumi-Inenemo Aminah is the CEO of Handmadepreneur.
I am very excited to be introducing this amazing Founder and her brand to you. Keep reading to Meet the Founder of Handmadepreneur-(Exclusive Interview)
  • Please introduce yourself and your background

I am Adewumi-Inenemo Aminah. A graduate of industrial chemistry from the great University of Benin. I hail from Ikate  Akoko North East Ondo state.

  • Tell us about your work. How did your company start?

I started Handmadepreneur in 2019 after my epistle of searching for a bag of my choice in 2018 as an expectant mum of a set of twins. Since I couldn’t get any, it occurred to me that many Nigerians face this problem of not being able to tweak their bag of choice since their quest for a durable, quality and well finished bag is top priority.

  • How did you come about the name and what does it mean?

Handmadepreneur came from the fact that I wanted the name handmade emblazoned in my products and as my name as it would also depict to people that the bags are handmade. I then added –preneur from the word entrepreneur.

  • What is your niche and how did you know it was a market to get into?

My niche are families with kids under age of 19 as I saw most mothers face the problem of getting the right bag for their toddlers, young ones in elementary or themselves, in terms of packing both their personal items and that of their children all in one piece; this is  typical to the African woman. Also I realised from my survey that most mothers wish their kids bags are like ‘this or that’ due to their own peculiarity and because they are yet to find that Nigerian bag maker who gives them their bag the way they want it, they opt for imported ones to solve one of their quest.

  • Where do you get the inspiration for your products?

I get them from narrations of pains parents discuss with finding their bags and my imagination of possibilities of what a bag could have.

  • Can you remember one of the first products you made? What makes it memorable?

Our multi-pocket diaper bag. It was sold out before I blinked my eyes. Mothers loved it for its features such as, lots of pockets, it’s ability to keep their baby’s items all in one place and organized.

  • What are some of the challenges you face in your business?

Structure! Getting the right personnel and marketing right.

  • Do you have any regrets venturing into this line of business?

None. Not even a tiny bit.

  • What is your most popular product?

School backpack and lunch bag.

  • To what extent do you draw upon your Nigerian (African) heritage for your work?

For now we are not much of African but soon we intend bringing in the African touch. Making our own arts of African heritage on our bags.

  • What are some of your short term and long term goals, both in your business and life in general?

To be a brand that would be a game changer to many women, by providing them with trainings, and an opportunity to provide employment for themselves.

To improve my business skills by taking a business management course in 2022.

Get certified internationally as a bag designer.

  • What would people be surprised to learn about you?

That I am a star chemistry teacher. 😂 I mean students loved my class and wondered why I left.

  • What profession would you be in if you weren’t in this Industry?

Teaching. I would be a teacher but then again, we are all teaching, in one form or the other.

  • If you could give one piece of advice to anyone who wants to start their own business in your industry, what would it be?

Never think small. Always aim at the best and you will see how you will work to achieve it

  • And finally, please share images of some of your work and tell us a little about each product

4 Bag Care sins you need to repent from🤣

bags by Ethnik Africa Utu on Bellafricana marketplace

Hi! Do you know that a lot of us have been doing some things wrong when it comes to caring for our handbags? I was guilty of some of these “Bag care Sins” but now I know better. I will be sharing them with you soon, but while I am doing that, feel free to browse through some beautiful handbags by Bellafricana Members. Are you ready? Let’s get started:

Sin #1. Keeping your Bag in the Box:

I know you love staring at your bags in their little boxes, sitting pretty. But leather cracks when there is no air. Imagine sitting in a choked up place without ventilation. That’s exactly how your bag feels. What you can do instead is to put them in drawstring bags to avoid dust settling on them, as well as preserve the fabric.

Sin #2. Using your blow-dryer to air out a wet bag:

If you notice a water spill, using a blow-dryer, or any other form of heat that isn’t natural, can cause serious damage to your bag. So, why not allow it air out naturally? Remember not to also put it out in direct sunlight. Instead, store them in a cool, dry place.

Sin #3. Not Stuffing the bag when not in use:

Bags tend to lose their form or shape when empty. This period when most of your bags will not be in much use, you can stuff them with a mass of clean clothes, or throwpillows to help retain the shape.

View More bags by Oeclat here

Sin #4. Hanging your bags:

How many of us are guilty of this? Putting a bag up by the handles can cause the handles to lose shape, or even crack. If your bags have been out-living their handles, this may be a reason why.

So, there you have it! I hope you have learnt a thing or two from this, and trust you will repent from your “Bag Care sins” (if guilty)🤣

Meet The Founder Of Detail Africa (Exclusive Interview)

NAJU-B-1

Detail Africa is the newest addition to the Bellafricana Verified Family, and I am very excited to be introducing this amazing brand to you. Keep reading to meet the Founder, Seromume Ikogho, as he speaks with Jessica of Bellafricana.

  • Please introduce yourself and your background.

My mane is Seromume Ikogho. I studied accounting at Covenant University. I am a chartered accountant and business consultant, with over three years’ business consulting experience serving small and medium businesses as well as multinationals.

  • Tell us about your work. How did Detail Africa start?

I observed the unpopularity of men carrying proper leather work bags when I got a personal work bag from Dubai about three years ago. It made me think that there was a gap in the market for the product, so I went around to the market and noticed that quality men’s leather bags were either great quality but too expensive or low quality and affordable.

I wanted to bridge this gap and put Africa on the global scale in terms of fashion, especially regarding men’s leather bags and other leather accessories. Since commencement of production in 2017, we have increased our product lines from work and travel bags to include wallets, pouches, portfolios and other leather accessories.

  • How did you come about the name and what does it mean?

I have always been very particular about attention to detail. It’s a guiding principle I follow in all my work. I wanted to build a brand that would be an extension of my personality, hence I came up with the name ‘Detail’.

Furthermore, I have always seen Africa as my primary market and not Nigeria. So, I decided to include that in the brand name to remind us of our ideals, embrace diversity and inclusion, and drive us to conquer the continent.

  • What is your niche and how did you know it was a market to get into?

Our niche is men’s leather bags. As mentioned earlier, I observed the unpopularity of men carrying proper leather work bags when I got a personal work bag from Dubai about three years ago.

  • Where do you get the inspiration for your products?

I constantly try to understand the lifestyle of our target market. I take time to talk to people in order to know what they need in a bag and what inspires them. I’m also a big fan of western brands such as Carl Friedrik and Frank Clegg.

  • Can you remember one of the first products you made? What makes it memorable?

Yes, I remember the first product we made. It was the Naju briefcase. It is memorable because it was named after my dad. He constantly encourages and inspires me to do better and be better.

  • What are some of the challenges you face in your business?

The journey has been exciting and depressing at the same time. Everyday has been a new opportunity to learn and improve. Entrepreneurship is difficult but entrepreneurship in Nigeria is even more difficult because of the infrastructural deficit. It is a herculean task trying to maintain great brand reputation when the surrounding environment is not an enabling one and many artisans are on survival mode. However, we have been able to learn on the job and come out on top.

  • Do you have any regrets venturing into this line of business?

Not at all.

  • What is your most popular product?

Our Detail Signature Bag.

  • To what extent do you draw upon your Nigerian (African) heritage for your work?

We promote Africa through our ideals and branding and also have plans to release a new collection before summer 2020 where we will infuse a lot of African designs, prints and accessories.

  • What are some of your short term and long term goals, both in your business and life in general?

Our medium term vision is to establish presence in at least four countries in Africa, as well as three countries outside Africa, and also, invest in backward integration/leather tanning by 2025. Our long term vision is to significantly change the narrative surrounding the Nigeria leather industry and its value chain on a continental and global level.

  • What would people be surprised to learn about you?

I used to rap in university lol

  • What profession would you be in if you weren’t in this Industry?

Management consulting

  • If you could give one piece of advice to anyone who wants to start their own business in your industry, what would it be?

Don’t start ‘small’, start ‘lean’

And finally, please share images of some of your work and tell us a little about each product.

Fashion in the Work Place: Spice up your Office Outfits

Wearing the same outfit to the office can get boring at some point; not to mention that we sometimes run out of clothes to wear, and having to decide what to wear again, every single day from our conventional office outfits can be frustrating. As a 9-5 worker myself, I just want to throw my hoodie on a nice pair of comfortable shorts, wear my slippers, cross my bag and head to work. Unfortunately, that’s a poor choice of outfit and I would probably lose my job.

The office isn’t exactly a place to show off your fashion skills and dress over the top but when you work in a big organization, you’re required to dress your best and look as presentable as possible. It’s worthy to note that fashion at the work place isn’t for females alone, as we love seeing our men dressed in a nice two or three piece designer suit.

Take away the conventional skirt, blouse/blazer and pair of flats for women, as well as the conventional black, brown or jean trouser, button-up shirt and boring polished shoes for men, you can take your office outfit from normal to creative whilst dressed in pure African made clothing, looking as elegant as possible.

So then, how can you spice up your office outfit without looking like you are going for a James Bond movie premier? I have selected a few office-worthy outfits from verified Bellafricana members for both  men and women to give you that office outfit inspiration.

WOMEN:

I don’t know if it’s just me but there’s something “normal” about seeing female office workers dressed in skirt/pant suit, a blouse/blazer (usually black/navy blue), matched with a pair of flats. I mean, normal is boring and we see/wear those outfits everyday! You don’t have to be an American or work in America to dress like a fashion guru to the work place, and you don’t need to break the bank to do so either. You also don’t need to overdo your outfit to get compliments or turn heads at your work place; and that’s why I am here, to transform your office outfit.

Two-Piece Suit:

Female two piece suit, Fashion in the Work Place fabric made by Adire lounge bellafricana verified

I know, suit again, but this isn’t the conventional, dull looking office suit, thankfully! Fabric Made by Adire Lounge, this two piece suit is everything! It is super stylish, classy, and don’t get me started on the fabric. From the color assemble which is actually my favorite thing about this outfit to the V-line details, the pocket details and the button with that fluffy design, this outfit will certainly be my go-to to brighten my Monday and revamp my office wardrobe.

Best part is that this suit is a mixture of different colors so you have so many color options when deciding to pair it without looking too colorful and, regardless of your age, you can rock this suit to your office and still look classy. I would pair this outfit with a black inner like she did, a red shoe, minimal makeup with red lips to stand out, and probably a blue bag/purse to pull the whole look together.

You can also decide to add a few accessories like a silver dropping earring or bracelet, but go for minimal, less flashy accessories as the suit is colorful enough.

Shoe:

Female shoes by k aspen bellafricana verified

Push your flat shoes to the curb; heels at the office is a big yes for looking elegant and classy; just make sure to keep it below 4 inches. Pump’s are perfect for the work place because they’re not “party-like” or too flashy so you’ll still look work-ready and classy at the same time.

I actually love that this pump, made by K. Aspen is a mixture of two simple colors (mustard yellow and red), so this makes it office-ready and at the same time, you can turn it from a day-to-night shoe; probably for dinner. This pump also has similar colors as the two piece suit so its a perfect pair for it…outfit inspiration!

Wear your designer two piece suit, paired with this pump and you’re good to go for that jaw-dropping look once you arrive at the office. You can as well pair this shoe with a black, lace fitted gown to beautify the outfit, a yellow jumpsuit or whatever you’d like; the options are endless.

Bag:

Women bags, insipre by pine tree bellafricana verified

Going to work without a bag? I didn’t think so! Bags are every woman’s best-friend; they’re where you keep makeup, accessories, books, even cats. Everything goes into your bags as they keep you organized on the go and are also made to complement your outfit, which is why just any bag can’t be pick when heading out.

Most people choose big bags but, I am transforming your office wears into something elegant and that includes bags; so no more gigantic bags. Small, purse-like bags are the new “it” because they keep you more organized than big bags which leaves searching for one thing or the other.

A black bag would be good but you need to add a little bit of color, which is why this Biro blue bag by Inspire by Pine Tree with a touch of Ankara is perfect. The color on its own is bright and beautiful and as such, it can complement any outfit, the bag is small, portable and chic. What’s not to like?

MEN:

The only thing more attractive than a man who dresses well is a man who smells nice; but let’s talk about your outfit instead, and not your perfume. Your perfume can smell so nice but a good perfume on an ugly outfit is a big no! Button-up shirts and black/brown trouser is no longer in vogue, and it’s pretty boring now.

Not to mention that well dressed men are considered more attractive than women because of their masculine physique and strong facial look. As a guy, you don’t have to wear too much to look good; simplicity is key for men. Here’s how you can transform your office outfit:

Suits:

Men suits

We’re not talking about the traditional suit but rather, a fashionable designer suit. Away with the ugly, grandpa suit and in with the modern James Bond suit! This suit by JZO Fashion is fashionable, simple and classic all in one; it’s also bright but not too flashy at the same time so it says “hello, notice me”.

This Biro blue suit with a touch of woven black by the waist pocket and plain black by the breast pocket, along with black pants is enough to create a bold look for any man, any day, anywhere. I love that there’s a distinction compared to other male suits as the jacket doesn’t end on the same line when you button it, and it has a touch of “Africa” with the noticeable detail on the waist pocket. Pair this outfit with a nice pair of wristwatch and a leather shoe, and you’re good to go. Best part is that you can take this suit from a day-to-night outfit as well so you get to turns heads both in and outside your office.

Shoe:

men shoes

Shoes are a necessity for every outfit and although most men wear sandals or sneakers to work, for an elegant office look, I prefer more of a premium, designer footwear suited for the office (not Nike sneakers; that’s for a day out). Looking at this shoe by Morok Xpression, it is breathtaking! There is no way you will wear this and not feel comfortable, everyone would even have their eyes on you because this shoe is a bold statement meant to pull together any look.

Sure, it is black but it is a shiny black made of high quality leather, and the fabric hanging halfway down from the buckle is another noticing detail. It is not an everyday shoe you will buy from the market which makes it the perfect choice of shoe. Your sandals will feel ordinary but pairing this shoe with a statement suit is sure to transform any boring office outfit into something elegant.

Choosing an outfit for the office can be a bit daunting; especially when you have worn everything you possibly own but when you have the right, elegant outfit and you know what to buy as well as what to pair it with, you will never run out of what to wear.
