Healthy Hair Essentials for Your Bundle of Joy

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”] Before the arrival of my baby, Muna, I took time to research and find out what I exactly needed for her healthy hair care. Based on my findings, I came up with a list of products and tools required to properly nurture her locs from birth.
One major factor that I paid attention to before I purchased the products was SAFETY. I had to confirm that the products, be it a conditioner or a shampoo was going to be safe for a baby… [/dropcap]

To do this, I went to a website called Environmental Working Group, and it is a place where you can find out the safety rating of any product. Products from most of the internationally known brands are listed on the website and their safety level is rated based on a scale of 1 to 10.
Below are the essential things you would need to buy for your baby’s hair care;

  1. Wash and Shampoo: Most baby safe shampoos double as a bath wash as well, for me I used the Burt’s Bees Baby Bee Wash and Shampoo. It is important to note that this is only necessary for the baby’s first year. When your baby turns one, you can switch up to a regular kids, tear free shampoo. It is also important to pick an all-natural, sulphate free shampoo.
  2. Conditioners: There are four main types of conditioners but you do not need to have all of them at once. However, you do need to have at least two of them, for your baby’s first year. In the order of priority you need the leave – in conditioner, rinse out conditioner, and deep conditioner. For me, I always have a baby safe styling conditioner (which doubles as a leave – in conditioner) and a rinse out conditioner. Then I use my deep conditioner for my baby as well, that way I save money on purchasing an extra leave in conditioner and deep conditioner.
  3. Wide tooth, rat tail combs and baby brush
  4. Coconut oil: Or any other natural oils you are comfortable with, like Shea butter.
  5. Satin head rests: These satin headrests are needed for the prevention of hair loss that come as a result of the nature material where he/she sleeps or rests. For example, cotton material has the tendency to absorb the natural moisture from a baby’s hair, which could lead to dryness and breakage. Also the harsh material of the baby car seat and bouncer have this negative effect on a baby’s hair. Therefore providing a satin material for your baby to rest on is essential to creating a slippery soft and protective landing for your baby’s head on the crib, bouncer and car seat.
